Mome, You were a beautiful and strong woman. You have been through so much in your lifetime. I always said I wanted to be like you. You had so much love to give and taught us how important family values are. I remember taking you shopping especially Christmas time. We would leave in the morning and didn't return home till the evening. What I would do to have another shopping day with you once again. Another memory I would never forget was when we were watching the cartoon movie Coco and a song came on that you knew. Even with alzheimer you started singing. That was such a joy to hear and see that smile on your face. I miss sitting next to you, holding your hand and talking to you while you suck on your lolly pop. You are now in the house of the Lord and I know you are happy. What a beautiful place for you to be. Even though I feel an empty space in my heart, I know one day I will reunite with you in heaven. Love you my beautiful angel mome for ever and ever.

Mome, I hope you are happy in heaven and that your memory is strong. I wish I could keep you here forever, but Jesus was calling for you. It's so sad, when I go into your room and you are not there. In the mornings, I water my plants, feed the birds and feed my adopted cat Goldie. Enjoyed my garden more when you were around. How you love to see the birds bathe in the water. Birthdays and Christmases will be hard without you for I know how much you loved being with the family and opening presents. I'm glad you left many siblings for me, to talk with when I need to be comfort and loved. My siblings and Jesus will help me get through these hard times ahead. Please be my guardian angel and keep me safe. I love you always and forever. Kisses to heaven. LiLi

I grew up in a multi-generational home with my mother and my grandmother. I called my grandmother “Abuela” and it wasn’t until I was in 1st grade that I realized that wasn’t her name. My abuela was the mother of 9 children, so we had a big family. She worked the night shift at a factory. Her arroz con gandules was the best and she taught me how to make it. During the holidays, we definitely had to stay out of the kitchen while she was cooking for the entire family. She loved spending time with her family and making sure that we were well fed. As a kid, she would send me to the corner store to buy a few things, like eggs, but would always give me a little extra to get a candy or an ice cream. I learned from her to check the eggs before buying them (after I brought home a few cracked ones!). The smell of cafe con leche will alway remind me of her. The last time I saw her was last year at my mom’s 70th birthday party. Reflecting on her life, I think about what a strong woman she was. Moving to the US from Puerto Rico and raising 9 children, suffering the loss of one of her children, becoming a single mother, surviving cancer- it could not have been easy, but she persevered. I am sad and I will miss my abuela.
